How Does it Work?

An Air Source Heat Pump works by absorbing heat from the air which can then be used to heat up radiators, underfloor systems, warm air convectors and hot water. The Heat pump draws heat from the air outside, even with external temperatures as low as -15C. They require electricity to run and so do have an effect on the environment but the energy they extract from the air is continually being renewed naturally.  

Air to Water Heat Pump 

Air to water systems use your wet central heating system to distribute heat. As they work at a much lower temperature than standard heating systems it makes them more suitable for underfloor or large radiator systems, giving out lower heat over a longer period of time.

Is it the right choice for you?

Firstly, do you have somewhere to put it?

The outdoor unit is ideally installed on an external wall where there is plenty of air flow and lots of space, this helps to optimize the efficiency of the system. The indoor unit and hot water tank often go in an airing cupboard , utility room or garage.

Is your house well insulated?

Because Air Source Heat Pumps run on a low temperature the more insulated and draught proof your house is the more you will get from the system. 

What are you replacing?

You will get a better return from your heat pump than an electric or coal based system however if you are currently on mains gas it may not be the best option. 
 

What type of heating system are you planning?

Due to the lower water temperatures needed for Air source Heat Pumps they perform better with underfloor and warm air heating systems than radiators. 

Are you doing any building works? 

It can help to reduce the cost of installing the system when combined with other building work.
